COMMUNITY EVENTS

• Sands Secondary 50th Anniversary: May 3, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m., 10840 82nd Ave. The 2023-24 school year marks Sands Secondary’s 50th Anniversary, and we are excited to welcome past and present students and staff to celebrate this momentous occasion. As a school community, we will be hosting a celebration on Friday, May 3rd that will include food, performances, photos, tours, an alumni volleyball game, cake and much, much more. We encourage our community and alumni to come and connect with former friends and staff, walk down memory lane and celebrate our school. Please spread the word about this celebration and we hope to see many of you in attendance.

NATURE/ENVIRONMENT

• City Nature Challenge 2024 – Observation Walks with the Delta Naturalists: April 27, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. For the third year in a row, the City of Delta will be participating in the City Nature Challenge. Explore, discover and share the incredible biodiversity found in Delta by observing nature all around us – birds, bats, butterflies, molluscs, trees, shrubs, ferns and more! Walks happening at Deas Island Regional Park (meet on the lawn by the Rowing Club), Boundary Bay Regional Park (meet by the Centennial Beach washrooms) and Delta Nature Reserve (meet at the Planet Ice parking lot). Walk-ins welcome, or register ahead of time by emailing cae@delta.ca.

• Bat Talk & Walk: May 30, 7:30 p.m - 10 p.m at Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre, 4450 Clarence Taylor Cres. Bats are very important animals that are feared and misunderstood by many. Come out for a night of adventure starting with a presentation discussing general facts about bats, bat habitat, where to watch bats at night, how to minimize a bat encounter if you have them feeding or roosting on your property, and ways to support and help local bat populations. Then stroll through a park where you will be able to watch and hear bats in their natural habitat. During the walk, we will discuss echolocation and how to safely watch bats. • Delta Matinee Series – New Orford String Quartet: May 14, 1 p.m. at North Delta Centre for the Arts. The Vancouver Chamber Music Society (VCMS) presents an afternoon of world-renowned music in North Delta. THEATRE

• ‘Constellations’: April 26, 6:45 p.m. - 9:45 p.m.; April 27, 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. at North Delta Centre for the Arts, 11425 84th Ave. Join us for an exciting and immersive event as we embark on a stellar journey and explore the wonders of the universe. Constellations narrates the enchanting love between Roland, a beekeeper, and Marianne, a physicist. From an improbable encounter at a barbeque, their story unfolds across parallel moments, exploring the infinite trajectories of love and the profound impact of choices on the course of relationships. The play challenges our understanding of time and space, showcasing the myriad possibilities that love can offer. Tickets available at eventbrite.com.

• ‘Cinderella’: May 1-4, 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. at Seaquam Secondary. The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmark of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. The second remake in 1997 starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, this romantic fairy tale still warms the hearts of children and adults alike. YOUTH WEEK 2024

• The Amazing Race: April 30, 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Hillside (11339 84th Ave., North Delta) and Wintemute (4727 Arthur Dr., Ladner) Boys and Girls Clubs and Winskill Aquatic & Fitness Centre (5575 9th Ave., Tsawassen). Several teams across the South and North Delta will race around the city making pit stops where they complete various challenges to gather clues that will help them move forward to win the game. Event wraps up with a BBQ for all participants! Open to Delta School District students only — register via your high school.

The event will feature keynote speakers DJ Barron S and Len Pierre, who will address critical issues such as mental health and violence. • Meet on the Mat: May 3, 2:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at North Delta Secondary, 11447 82nd Ave. Wrestling and self-defence techniques & practice sessions hosted by Yo Bro | Yo Girl Youth Initiative (YBYG) in partnership with the Delta School District and the Delta Police Department. Through demos, drills, games and practice, participants will learn different wrestling and self-defence techniques, including grappling and martial arts. Sessions are open to all skill levels. • Public Education Night: May 22, 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at North Delta Secondary School, 11447 82nd Ave. and via livestream. The Delta Police Department in collaboration with the Delta School District is presenting a public educational night on the topics of human trafficking, child exploitation and gangs, featuring guest speakers from Stop Exploiting Youth and CFSEU followed by an expert panel discussion and Q&A. • Supporting Children to Have a Positive Relationship with Food: May 23, 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. via Zoom; Delta School District presents this free education session for paernts and caregivers. There are so many messages in our society around what we should and shouldn’t be eating, which can end up creating a lot of stress for parents when it comes to feeding your child. HELP FOR NEWCOMERS TO CANADA

• Settlement Workers at Your Library: second and fourth Tuesday of the month (May 13) 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. at George Mackie Library. Are you an international student, work permit holder, refugee, refugee claimant, permanent resident or a Canadian citizen who needs help adjusting to your new life? Settlement workers from S.U.C.C.E.S.S. comes one the first Tuesday of the month and Settlement workers from PICS come on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. A Settlement Worker who speaks Dari/Pashto is at your library on the first Tuesday of the month (May 7), 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.

HEALTH/ WELLNESS

• Yin Yoga: Every Monday, 6 p.m. - 7 p.m.; Deltassist, 9097 120 St.; The main goal of Yin Yoga is to open joints, stretch deep tissue and release deep, long held emotion. In Yin Yoga we learn how to better listen to our bodies, by allowing ourselves to slow down enough to listen to the clues from the unconscious mind of what is actually going on we learn everything we need to know. Note: You will want to have a few pillows (couch, bed or throw pillows will work fine), as well as a blanket or two to ensure you are nice and comfy as well as fully supported for your practice. • Restorative Yoga: Every Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.; Deltassist, 9097 120 St.; Restorative Yoga is designed to provide support and help the body relax. Often referred to as active relaxation we learn to fully support our physical bodies in order to allow for a gentle opening and softening in to relaxation. • Hatha Yoga, Breath & Mindfulness Meditation: Every Thursday, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.; Deltassist, 9097 120 St.; Whether you’re seeking stress relief, improved flexibility, or simply a moment of tranquility in your busy day and life, these classes will provide a nurturing space for you to unwind and connect with yourself from a space of kindness and compassion. CLUBS

• The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), the North Delta/Surrey chapter, will hold its annual book sale from Thursday, April 11 to Saturday, April 13 at Scottsdale Mall (7031 120 Street). A wide variety of donated books, both fiction and non fiction are offered for sale. Proceeds from the book sale provide annual bursaries to deserving female graduates of all five North Delta high schools, as well as a bursary to a female student from Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Donations of books prior to the book sale are welcome (except text books, encyclopedias and National Geographic magazines).
