With a new South Surrey school in the planning phase, the school district is holding a contest to help name the school.

A new elementary school was announced for the Darts Hill area in Surrey in March, which has been listed as a priority area by the school board. Still in the planning for development phase, further details on capacity for the anticipated school are not yet known.

The school is planned for the corner of 20 Avenue and 174 Street. Surrey Schools is now holding a naming contest open to anyone interested in throwing their hat in the ring.

“Schools are central to our neighborhoods, and the name of this new school should inspire future generations and represent our collective spirit and history,” school board chair Laurie Larsen said in a news release.

“We are excited to see the creative and meaningful names our community proposes.”

With the aim of having a name that symbolizes the identity of the school district, name suggestions to be submitted online must also follow the district’s policy 6600.

Under this policy, it is outlined that school names should not be too similar to one another in order to not create confusion, and names should have historical or geographical significance when possible. In addition, if a school is named after a figure, consent needs to be obtained by the district, including for a deceased person — unless they are of distinction — from close surviving relatives.

District officials and board trustees will review all of the entries, which can be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. Thursday, May 9.

“This new school symbolizes our commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in South Surrey, and we are eager to open its doors with a name that proudly reflects our community’s heritage and vision,” Larsen said.
