LETTER: Public hearing for Delta’s new OCP was a waste of residents’ time

Lack of time taken to digest speakers’ feedback shows the meeting’s results were a ‘forgone conclusion’

Dozens of residents spoke out against proposed changes to Delta’s Official Community designed to open the door to greater density across the city, including the potential for high-rise towers in three newly-designated “urban centres,” during a public hearing on Monday, April 22, 2024. Re: “New Delta OCP passes third reading despite strong opposition at hearing,” April 23, 2024

Days after attending and speaking at the public hearing on the Official Community Plan (OCP), I’m still in disbelief on the absolute debacle of Delta council on the entire matter.

Despite overwhelming opposition to the OCP including more than 480 written submissions and 50 speakers, and only a mere six in support of it, Delta council once again dismissed its residents from having a voice in our city’s future.

Our elected officials didn’t even give us the appearance of considering resident feedback by deferring the vote until the next council meeting.

Instead, those elected to represent the people of Delta chose to give a 10-minute pre-written speech right after the last speaker in an attempt to justify voting in favour of the OCP.

Therefore, it was a forgone conclusion before anyone submitted feedback or spoke at the public hearing.

What a waste of resident’s time. Where is the democracy in Delta? When several [other] mayors have recently spoken out against the housing target orders and are standing up for their communities and constituents, why is Delta council so rogue?
