It’s time to play ball.
Softball season always arrives with the sunnier weather on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, and the South Surrey White Rock Minor Softball Association marked the occasion with their opening day celebration on Saturday (April 13) at Sunnyside Park.
“The day was filled with energy and enthusiasm as we kicked off the softball season with various activities such as a parade of athletes, team banner and cheer competitions, exhibition games and inspiring speeches from esteemed dignitaries,” SSWRMSA president Thomas Bell said in an email to Peace Arch News.
”The turnout was fantastic, the sun was shining, and it was heartwarming to see the smiles on everyone’s faces. Sunnyside Park truly came alive with the vibrant spirit of our players and coaches, making the day truly unforgettable.”

This season, a “remarkable surge” of more than 15 per cent in player registrations led to the addition of three more house teams and three additional rep teams, he noted.
“We’ve welcomed many first-time softball players across many age groups, from our youngest Learn to Play to our U15 division. The growth has been so substantial that we are literally utilizing every available softball field, patch of grass or dirt that we can find in South Surrey for our teams to practise and play games,” said Bell.
“This surge in demand for softball in South Surrey is incredibly encouraging, and we are hopeful that additional fields will be constructed in the future to accommodate the growth we are experiencing. We take great pride in the increasing demand for softball in our community and are eager to see this trend continue.”
Bell said the association plans to build on last season’s success and is confident that this year will be even better.
“Alongside regular league play, we have a full calendar of tournaments lined up, including the Softball BC U19B Provincial Championship that will be played at Sunnyside Park and Peace Arch Park.”
Some recent improvements and enhancements to Sunnyside Park and Peace Arch Park have also helped elevate the experience for players, coaches and fans alike, Bell added.
